PROTECT AFFORDABLE BENEFITS AND CHOICE

At Iowans for Affordable Healthcare, we believe every family deserves access to affordable, high-quality health care, and the ability to choose what works best for them. That means protecting the benefits Iowans rely on while pushing back on policies that drive up costs or limit access to care.

For example, instead of piling on new costs, lawmakers should prioritize proven, sustainable solutions like HF 972, which passed with strong bipartisan support. This approach consolidates existing state funds, creating efficiencies, and uses federal resources to expand access to healthcare in rural areas by tackling healthcare workforce shortages. We’re also urging Congress to extend enhanced ACA premium tax credits to help thousands of Iowans afford coverage.

We support common-sense tools that help keep care safe and costs in check, like prior authorization when streamlined and used the right way. When done right, it helps prevent patients from being pushed into costly, low-value treatments or expensive brand-name drugs when better options exist.

We know that some conditions require advanced treatments, specialized procedures, or specific medications to ensure the best outcomes. But at the same time, too much of what we spend on health care—up to 30%—goes to treatments that are unnecessary, unproven, or even harmful. According to a study in JAMA, overtreatment or low-value care amounted to $75.7 billion to $101.2 billion in waste each year (JAMA, 2019). Those costs get passed on to Iowa families, farmers, small businesses, and workers.

Iowans need practical solutions, not political micromanagement, that protect affordable benefits, preserve patient choice, and keep the system working for the people it serves.
